Spring officially begins on March 20th. It arrives at 6:28am in the northern hemisphere. Many people take this time to do spring cleaning around their house and yard. It’s also a good time to cleanse and renew the energy in your house. I’m going to go over one of many cleansing rituals that you can do. Feel free to adapt it to what feels good for you and your circumstances. It can be done be yourself and it’s easier with help if you’re cleansing a house or building of some kind.

Preparations
Gather together a few items. I suggest using a sage stick or incense, matches, a small whisk broom, fan or some means for spreading the sage smoke around the room. A sage stick is easier but if you want to use incense sticks that’s ok. You may need a few incense sticks depending on the area you’re cleansing. You can use incense cones and burn them on a charcoal disk. If you’re doing this make sure the charcoal disk is in a flame AND heat proof container as you’ll be carrying it around your room(s). I would suggest using ritualized sand in a heat/flame proof container if going this route. Sweet grass may also be used. I find that the sage sticks are really the easiest way to go. Start on the top floor of a multistory house or building.

Starting
Using a sage stick I’ll proceed as follows: Joseph helps me so while one travels the room with the sage stick the other uses the fan to blow the smoke into all of the corners. Center your mind and think of your intentions. Light the sage stick and get it smoking. I usually start by thanking the energies in the room I’m in and ask those with helping, positive energies to stay, if they want, and those with negative or non-helping energies to move on. I start by the door to the room and work clockwise around the room fanning the smoke into the corners, around the windows etc. You can use the whisk broom, your hand, a feather fan or anything else to sweep the smoke around the windows and room. Sweep the smoke out the door to the room and proceed in a clockwise manner in the other rooms on this floor of the house.

Continuing
After all upper rooms are done, sweep down the stairs and do the next floor (assuming it’s not the first floor) same as above. When you get to the first floor (street level) open the front door to let this energy out. Thank the energies for helping and tell the energies it’s time to move on and ask any new, helping energies that want to come in to the area to come in.

Repeat this process in the basement, if you have one, and sweep the energy out either through a garage door or up the stairs and out the door again. If you have several sublevels, start at the lowest and work you’re way up to the first level, basically repeating the process described above but this time working from the bottom up.

Final Steps
Finish by doing the rooms on the main floor. Again do the rooms in a clockwise manner starting and ending at the rooms’ door, sweeping the energies out that door into the hallway. Gather all the energy from the rooms and sweep them out the main door to the house. It’s ok if you have to relight the sage stick or use a new cone or incense stick.

Additional Elements – Drumming, Crystals, GemStones
If you can’t use sage or incense, drumming in each room will do the same thing. Many people repeat this whole house cleansing at each Equinox. Feel free to cleanse any individual room throughout the year as you feel the energy needs to be changed, don’t wait for a special time. It’s just more effective and powerful during the Equinox.

This is also a good time to also recharge or cleanse the crystals you have or any gem stones you use. After smudging them in the smoke, place them in the window and allow the sun and moon’s energy to complete the cleansing. You can cleanse them any time during the year if you feel they need it. Placing anything under the light of a full moon for three days, the day before, day of and day after the full moon, will recharge the items and release old energies.

Hope you have a refreshing Spring!

  • Makes one wonder if we should offer a shamanic/spiritual housecleaning service, doesn’t it? Seriously, our home and the homes of others Susan does this for is noticeably different once the ritual is completed.

  • Thanks so much for this Susan. I will be using this guide today! One question to do with salt: do you recommend sprinkling salt on doorways and windows before or after smudging and does it matter when or if you vacuum it up? Thanks again!
