From the Owl’s Nest – Celestial Observations Occurring
Well…August sure was a fun month. We had the solar eclipse, an asteroid fly by and the Perseid meteor showers! In the NE we had about 60% totality during the eclipse. It was still a wonder and had lots of energy. There will be another eclipse in 2024 where NE will be in the path of totality. We also had overcast skies during the meteor showers. Oh well. A little trivia. Eventually there won’t be anymore total solar eclipses as the Moon is pulling away from the Earth a little every year and eventually the relative size of the shadow won’t be enough to cause a total eclipse. Don’t worry, that won’t happen for millions of years. For Sept we had the Autumnal Equinox. The Wiccans call it Mabon and it occured on Sept 21. It’s also known as the first day of fall. A time where the day and night are of equal lengths. This is also the time of the second harvest. Where we bring in more of the crops from the fields and start to prepare for the shorter days and winter to come. Yes, people, the days become noticeably shorter now. The Full Moon occurred on Sept 6th and was the Corn Moon named because it’s the time to harvest the corn. The Full Moon in Oct occurs on the 5th and is called the Harvest Moon because it’s the full moon that falls closest to the Autumnal Equinox. The full moon cast enough light to continue the harvest after the sun sets. In Oct we also have the Orionids meteor showers from October 4th to November 14th. The peak night is from Oct 21-22. Let’s hope for some clear skies. |
